Cell Seeding Calculator
Work out how to plate the same number of cells in every well of a multi-well plate. Use it after counting your cells, before seeding plates for assays, transfections or passaging.
Enter your cell concentration (or a hemocytometer count) and how many cells you want per well. We'll tell you how much cell suspension and medium to mix.
How it's calculated
Concentration (cells/mL) = average cells per large square × dilution factor × 10,000
Live cells/mL = concentration × viability %
Wells to mix = wells × (1 + extra %), rounded up
Cell suspension = cells per well × wells to mix ÷ live cells/mL
Medium = volume per well × wells to mix − cell suspension
The 10,000 factor comes from the hemocytometer's large square holding 0.1 µL (10⁻⁴ mL). Viability is optional; leave it blank to count all cells.
